Super Street Fighter 4 Impressions

After a few days of play, here's what I thought.... 1. I realized that Ken seems to have gotten screwed again with his new Ultra. It seems useless since you can just sit underneath it and not even get chip damage....poor guy. 2. Ryu's Medium dragon punch prevents trading hits, and hits twice! Yay! 3. Guile's sonic boom does charge faster, but it seems harder to combo for me from low punch - medium punch to sonic boom consistently. It's easier to combo M.Bison's scissor kick from low or medium kicks. 4. Juri is the most interesting new character in this game (in terms of moveset and potential). Too bad her voiceover is horrific! (I should switch it to Japanese --- is it any better?) 5. Is it just me, or has everyone forgotten about the last four 'new' characters, Abel, Rufus, C.Viper and , what's his name again? El Fuerte? I dunno, I just don't feel like using them in SSF4 for no apparent reason....just IMHO 6. Saving replays automatically = win! Bein...

Street Fighter IV in Timezone, SM Megamall

I spotted these in Timezone, SM Megamall yesterday. They had 2 SF4 machines for 1vs1 play (one player on each machine). Both machines were set up with the correct HD screen resolution, so the characters don't look stretched (unlike the original setup before in Glorietta). I hope more players play on these Street Fighter machines, so that Timezone will know that a strong fanbase exists for Street Fighter, and so that they'll buy more units.

EVO 2009 Street Fighter 4 GRAND FINALS Videos!

Amazing series of matches from the Grand Finals of the EVO 2009 Street Fighter IV (World) Championship: Daigo Umehara from Japan plays Ryu, while Justin Wong from the USA plays both Abel and Balrog....the Grand Finals extends to over two sets! Part 3 has a sound problem where the audio turns into static, so turn down the volume when you play this video:

Daigo beats Justin Wong Again at EVO 2009

I wasn't able to catch the final match, but I've heard that Daigo bested Justin Wong again at EVO 2009. Daigo stuck with Ryu while Justin picked Balrog (Boxer). I'm still looking for a video of it on youtube....it's actually on ustream but the download speed from there is really slow. For now, I'll just have to settle with this match, the earlier 'winner's circle' round between Daigo and Justin, where Daigo picks Ryu and Justin picks Abel: I'll update this post once I find a video of the actual final match. They say it was really epic!

On Fighting Games This Year....

Just sitting down pondering on all these great fighting games that came out this year. Blazblue, Street Fighter IV, then later King of Fighters XII and Tekken 6....this year is pretty unprecedented in terms of attention that the genre is getting. I remember in the late nineties, when Street Fighter II was at its prime, there was also a lot of fighting games being released by various companies. You could say that the fighting game back then was the "first person shooter" of that generation. Companies were churning them out left and right, and a lot of them were simply derivative of Street Fighter II. At some point, I think gamers just got tired of all of them. Today, I'm not too sure if fighting games will overtake the current popularity of first-person shooters with younger gamers, but the ones that are being released today are really first-rate, high quality titles that all have their own unique personality. Currently, Blazblue gets the nod for seeming to be the most ori...

Can Your PC Run Street Fighter IV? Find Out Tomorrow

According to this post from http://www.andriasang.com/ , the benchmark program for Street Fighter IV PC will be out tomorrow: Excerpt: In last week's update at the Street Fighter IV blog, writer Natsuki Shiozawa announced that the Street Fighter IV benchmark would be offered at the official SFIV site on June 22, but would be accessible one week before that through an undisclosed means. Today's update filled in the blanks. On June 15, the benchmark program will be downloadable from the following sites: •Famitsu.com •4Gamer.net •GAMEWatch •OEX •GameSpot The benchmark will display the logo of the site of its origin, so you'll want to select the site with the least offensive logo (I'll help you out -- it's 4gamer). They found out by translating this blog post on the Street Fighter IV Blog, here: http://www.capcom-fc.com/sf4/2009/06/post_110.html In other news, the same blog post at the Street Fighter blog had Yoshinori Ono posing with some trophies their game just won,...

Street Fighter IV: Finally Hit 2,000 Games Played on Xbox Live

Hey, you never know if or when my Street Fighter IV save file might get corrupted! There are rumors on forums online that it just happens at random. So I took these pics here to preserve how much time I've put in on Street Fighter IV for the Xbox 360. Most of the games I play online are Player Matches, the reason being that I enjoy being able to relax a bit when playing and not worry about losing Battle Points or think about the skill level of the opponents that I might end up playing against. Going on Player Matches causes me to play against more 'new' players, though; but I don't really mind. It's good to play the game just for fun :) All the best players are in Championship mode or Ranked mode, occasionally I go there and I don't fare too well. But for the most part, many of my games online have just a slight bit of lag. I do have the occasional unplayable game, but I haven't had enough of those to make me hate the whole online experience with Street Figh...

Street Fighter IV in Timezone Glorietta 4 - Impressions

We were at Glorietta 4 today and surprisingly, we spotted 2 Street Fighter IV arcade machines at Timezone Glorietta 4. They had two system-linked SF4 arcade cabinets, where each cabinet only has one set of sticks. When you start the game, you're given an option to play 'arcade mode' (which is open to challengers), 'beginner mode' and 'trial mode'. (Pictures of the unit are at the bottom of this post, if you skip the impressions). Unfortunately, the other SF4 machine wasn't working at the time that we visited, so we weren't able to play versus mode against other live players. So I was only able to try out single-player mode. Some impressions: 1. The graphics are not as good as the home versions of the game. The arcade cabinet used high definition LCD monitors, much like Tekken 6; however, compared to the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions of the game, it seems the arcade version is running on the lowest possible graphical settings. Earlier on, there was a pers...

XBX Interactive An Ideal Place For Street Fighter IV Tournaments

We drove over to the Xbox 360 LAN Gaming Place XBX Interactive for the first time this morning. We were supposed to try out their Rockband 2 VIP rooms, but unfortunately I didn't have enough money for it. Instead of opting to come back again next time, though, we asked if they had STREET FIGHTER IV , and they did. And the second question we asked...was if they had fighting sticks. The answer was, yes. They had 2 of the fighting sticks pictured above; you could rent one stick for 25 pesos (so if there are two players you would have to pay 50 pesos). I remember seeing this stick before on Ebay; in fact, I think this link shows the exact same stick being sold there today. Unlike the CD-R King stick, this stick feels much more solid and responsive. The stick itself is a tad higher than the one on the Hori EX2, so occasionally I found myself unintentionally crouching (pushing down forward). But a little bit of personal adjustment on my end and I was very comfortable with it already. E...

Mad Catz PS3 Street Fighter IV Fightstick Spotted in I-TECH GREENHILLS!

News flash! We spotted the PLAYSTATION 3 MAD CATZ STREET FIGHTER IV Standard Arcade Fightstick over in I-TECH (Mr. Dynamic) in Virra mall/V-Mall Greenhills! Price: PHP 7,290.00 Platform: PLAYSTATION 3 Number of items: 2 Fightsticks still in stock as of 12:00 NN today. A couple of other stores were also selling what appeared to be a Chinese-made 'Fighting Joystick' for prices ranging from PHP 1,800 (Rockfire) to PHP 2,500 (Gamezone, i think). There were other stores which had this cheaper fighting stick. We got to take a look inside the box and despite the stick not being the 'TOURNAMENT EDITION' stick that is usually featured on most tournaments internationally, it still has a high-quality feel to it that you won't find with most other arcade sticks. The build quality on it seems much better than my existing Hori EX2 stick for my Xbox 360. I couldn't afford the stick at this time; got bills to pay and all....so in the end I didn't buy it. I am sure that t...

Justin Wong Claims He Will Beat Daigo at EVO This Year

http://www.eventhubs.com/news/2009/may/04/justin-wong-says-hes-player-beat-years-evo/ Twin Galaxies: In the International Finals round of the Tournament, you lost to Daigo Umehara. Tell us about that experience. Justin Wong: I lost to Daigo at the International Exhibition. If that was a real tournament, I would have changed to my counter character. He uses Ryu, and Ryu counter’s Rufus. Don’t get me wrong, Daigo is REALLY good; maybe too good. For someone like me, though, he's just my peer; I know what can beat him and what can't. A lot of people don't know this, but I went to Japan and beat him 10-4. It’s the truth. If someone says it’s a lie I'll go back to Japan again, because I'm going anyway, and I'll beat him again. ******************** IMHO, after watching his match with Daigo at this year's US Tournament, I'd still bet on Daigo. Justin Wong is a great player, the best in the United States---but I just think that Daigo is more exposed to a healthy ...

Street Fighter IV Championship Mode Impressions

The Championship Mode Update for SFIV was released yesterday night about 5PM Philippine Time. It was active early on for PSN; while Xbox Live users could get it at the same time as Playstation 3 owners, they could only use the update some time late in the evening. I've played a bit of this new mode and I am impressed by the effort Capcom put into it. I like how it doesn't deduct points when you're starting out and you lose to other players of the same rank. I do know that point deductions occur some time later in higher levels of play. That said, the competition on Championship at this time is quite fierce, perhaps because the players in the lower tiers are just starting to climb up. That means low tier and high tier players are mixed all in level 3-E. So if you're planning to play the new mode, be ready to lose a lot....I sure did. I do like how they give the matches a 'tournament' feel. Essentially this is just a different way of implementing ranked matches---...

WCG Fighter Club in the US : A Microcosm Which Tells You Which Game Players Want To Play Competitively

Just going around online and made an interesting observation on this site here: http://qualify.us.wcg.com/fighterclub The number of competitors which signed up is freely viewable via each game's "COMPETITORS" link. In summary: Virtua Fighter 5 Active Players: 64 Waiting Players: 13 Total Players: 77 Dead or Alive 4 Active Players: 64 Waiting Players: 20 Total Players: 84 Soulcalibur IV Active Players: 80 Waiting Players: 21 Total Players: 101 Street Fighter IV Active Players: 186 Waiting Players: 65 Total Players: 251 Clearly, when someone on the WCG committee picked Virtua Fighter 5 over Street Fighter IV or Soulcalibur IV, they dropped the ball, BIG TIME. Because if the WCG cares about getting sponsors, who are interested in seeing huge crowds watching competitive games, it's clear from those numbers that they picked the WRONG FIGHTING GAME for this year. Again, I've got nothing but respect for VF5 and it's technical fighting system, but there's no doub...

Street Fighter IV Championship Mode - "Power Up Pack" Out Now

The Street Fighter IV Championship Mode - "Power Up Pack" is now available on both the Playstation Network and Xbox Live Marketplace . For PSN it's a free update which will be prompted when you play the game, while for Xbox Live, you can get the update from the Game Marketplace (check the 'New arrivals' menu to find it). I wonder why the Xbox Live version is not a required update? Hmm.... According to Xbox Live, it weighs in at about 16.40 MB. :)
