THE REMATCH: Virtua Fighter 5 WCG Philippines 2008 Finalists

These videos are a series of rematches between the two finalists from the WCG Philippines 2008 Tournament for Virtua Fighter 5. These games were played over XBOX LIVE. I'm using Jacky while Ismael is using Akira. In these set of rematches, Ismael won a *LOT* more matches than me :( So I suppose you could say that Ismael got his revenge hahaha! I did have a lot of fun because the matches weren't so laggy (we were both on PLDT) compared to my usual experience on XBL playing against opponents from other countries. I was able to record only 4 replays of our rematches; two of the matches were wins from me, while the other two were his wins. I'll be uploading some more in the days to come. NOTE: Fully retiring myself from the world of competitive gaming; no longer planning on joining any international competitions. I am interested in helping find future champions, though :) Never retiring from playing VF just for fun; more and more, it's becoming my favorite fighting game of ...

WCG 2008 VF5 Finals Videos

Haven't gotten around to actually watching the VF5 videos from Germany until today. I found these on Youtube; the video on the official WCG site was so laggy and unreliable so I had better luck finding it elsewhere. Itabashi (Japan) vs Danny13 (Singapore) Japan won the tournament; here's footage of the last two rounds. Round 1: Round 2: For third place, AdamYuki from the USA won against stprock from Germany. Here's footage from Round 2:

Retrospective: Virtua Fighter 5 for the Xbox 360

For no apparent reason I decided to play Virtua Fighter 5 again for the Xbox 360; Quest Mode set to Expert difficulty. I picked up on it really fast even if I haven't played the game for months. I practiced so much with Jacky (for the WCG last year) that playing with this character is just second nature already (much like playing Ryu in Street Fighter II; you just know how to play once you've played one character enough times). A fighting game like VF5 is a great way to pass the time, and for some reason it just doesn't get old. The AI set to Expert offers a great enough challenge even if it does not match real human opposition. Well, with internet lag and all, playing against the AI fills the need for fighting action quite nicely. No need to wait in the lobby to get an opponent....no hassles with lag and disconnects, too. Despite my enjoyment of this fighting game, I don't have any plans to personally join any more gaming competitions/tournaments. After WCG 2008 last ...

What It's Like To Be A Pro Gamer - Part II

This is Part II of a continuing series that chronicles the whole 'Pro Gaming' experience that I went through this year. I guess I just want to have a memento of this week; I've never been part of any big competition like this; I think it counts for a lot for me to write this down as this week passes. I've been writing these chronicles during the time near the actual dates for the Asian Championship. By the time of this writing, I haven't posted Part I yet on my blog, because I practically give away my training regimen in that post, and I think it wouldn't be smart to give away that information before the actual competition. Whether or not my practice sessions worked would probably be known by the time that I actually post this...Did I win? Did I lose? It will be fun to look back at these writings once the competitions are all over. I will say that this chronicle has little in the way of actual information on my training...it's more of an interesting anecdote...

What It's Like To Be A "Pro Gamer" (For A Year) - Part I

I bought Virtua Fighter 5 in December of last year for the Xbox 360. Little did I know that buying that game would embark me on this crazy little journey in the world of 'professional gaming'. DISCLAIMER: First off, some expectation setting for readers. NO , I do not see myself as 'the best player' in Virtua Fighter 5; not in the Philippines, nor in the entire world. Let me put it in writing to be very clear. I AM NOT THE GREATEST VIRTUA FIGHTER 5 PLAYER IN THE PHILIPPINES. When I use the term 'Pro Gamer', I use it to mean "being completely dedicated to playing just one game for a longer-than-normal period of time, for the purpose of playing in an internationally-sanctioned competitive event (in this case, the World Cyber Games)". I'm clarifying this because of a little incident recently wherein my involvement in this tournament is being seen as questionable. My thoughts on that matter have already been posted elsewhere, and I'm not going to...

Videos: VIRTUA FIGHTER 5 on XBOX LIVE

Ever since SEGA patched VF5, the game has allowed players to save their online Xbox Live matches on their Xbox 360 hard disk drives and view them again later on as match replays. I thought this was one of the best features of the game, since it would let you review online matches and learn from your mistakes, and it would also let you revel in those hard-earned victories and close matches! Now I've recently recorded some of the best online matches I've ever had and I'm currently in the process of uploading these to Youtube. These replays not only demonstrate the level of competition that's available for VF5 on Xbox Live; they also show how great the netcode is for the game. The way it plays online practically feels like you're playing right next to your opponent. Granted there are those very rare occasions when you get into a laggy match, but for the most part, online matches feel and play as smooth as is demonstrated by this video. Note that my internet connection ...
