Tekken Tag Tournament 2 Review

Just picked up Tekken Tag Tournament 2 from Data Blitz the other day on launch. There has been a lot of good feedback from many gamers the world over about its netcode. Well, those gamers are in first-world countries so their connections are much better than ours over here in the Philippines, where our major telecommunications providers won't even interconnect with each other because of their business interests. Fighting game network code has not been so great for many games now, but the most recent releases like VF5FS and Persona 4 Arena have proven that it really is possible to have good online matches with fighting games. Tekken Tag Tournament 2 represents the next big evolution in online network play for fighting games. It comes with a ton of extra features just for online mode, include a detailed statistics-collecting website that connects with your game to let you know more about your own personal progress. It's a step in the right direction for the genre. While it is t...

Keiji Inafune's Exit Interview, Translated

This is for the ones out there with a a misplaced, romantic notion of what Japanese game development is like. Shamelessly stolen from NEOGAF, before it disappears completely: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=411847 I've taken the liberty of translating the 4Gamer interview with Keiji Inafune , originally published on Friday, October 29th and discussed in this thread . Hopefully this will help folks understand the motivations behind his departure from Capcom as well as his future plans. As I can't claim that the translation is perfect, any feedback is welcomed. Thanks to Mandoric for spot-checking a couple of trouble spots with the translation. --- 4Gamer (4G): Thank you for your time today. Recently, you've made some rather extreme remarks and taken on many projects, so today's interview is to follow up with what you meant and how you're doing. Keiji Inafune (KI): Thank you. But I've already decided to leave Capcom. 4G: What? KI: I'm quitting. Th...

On Fighting Games This Year....

Just sitting down pondering on all these great fighting games that came out this year. Blazblue, Street Fighter IV, then later King of Fighters XII and Tekken 6....this year is pretty unprecedented in terms of attention that the genre is getting. I remember in the late nineties, when Street Fighter II was at its prime, there was also a lot of fighting games being released by various companies. You could say that the fighting game back then was the "first person shooter" of that generation. Companies were churning them out left and right, and a lot of them were simply derivative of Street Fighter II. At some point, I think gamers just got tired of all of them. Today, I'm not too sure if fighting games will overtake the current popularity of first-person shooters with younger gamers, but the ones that are being released today are really first-rate, high quality titles that all have their own unique personality. Currently, Blazblue gets the nod for seeming to be the most ori...

On Capcom Japan's Decision NOT To Go To E3 2009.

Here's Kotaku making too much of a big deal of Capcom Japan's decision not to go to E3 2009. I actually AGREE with Capcom Japan. I'd rather that Capcom Japan's very-talented-developers and staff not take the risk of being infected with the H1N1 virus. Personally, I can wait for Dead Rising 2 to be revealed at another time. It's not like the game itself is getting delayed. I think it's just the game journalists over at Kotaku crying over not being able to get first dibs on Capcom's upcoming games. And besides, Capcom can always organize their own press events later on this year, with much more attention directed towards them, than having to fight for attention at a noisy convention center during E3 itself. At this time, I think Capcom has the best and most talented development teams outside of the United States and Europe developing games for current generation consoles. It would be a real shame to lose them to H1N1; it's definitely NOT worth the risk for...

Capcom's E3 Games Lineup

Eagerly looking forward to this one: http://www.capcom-unity.com/kramez/blog/2009/05/06/capcom_and_you_at_e3_2009 E3 -- aka the Electronic Entertainment Expo -- is fast approaching. "What's that?" you may ask. "Why the hell should I care?" you may shrug. If you had either of these responses, you've accidentally come to Capcom Unity on the way to finding either sports scores or porn or both, so move right along, quit wasting our bandwidth. For the rest of ya, you know exactly what this means: crazy amounts of games invading the LA Convention Center from June 2 through the 4th. Now, onto the even better news: some of you will be hanging out with us at the show! Last year, we hosted 30 members of Capcom Unity at out teeny-tiny E3 booth and we'll be doing the same this year. If you live in the greater Los Angeles area or plan on being there on June 4th, watch Unity over the coming weeks to find out how you can score a pass to the show, meet Seth, Shawn, Chri...

Want Marvel Vs. Capcom 3? Buy Marvel Vs. Capcom 2!

Just reading around the capcom-unity forums, and I found an interesting tidbit there about the possibility of Marvel vs. Capcom 3 ever getting made: http://www.capcom-unity.com/ask_capcom/go/thread/view/7371/14396175/Is_Capcom_current_rights_holder_for_Marvel_fighting_games?num=10&pg=1 Question: I remember back then when people here said Capcom can't release MVC2 because EA currently has the rights for Marvel fighters and it won't happen until later in the future. So my question is did EA's rights finally expire and Capcom aquired it back? Or did Capcom figure out a way around it to make this happen? Either way I must tell Capcom, nice job! Answer from Sven at Capcom: The MvC2 deal pertains ONLY to MvC2. Anything that happens beyond that will be contingent upon MvC2's performance (and naturally, Marvel has considerable say in that decision too). In response to this message: They [Electronic Arts] did not get the rights back. This is pretty common knowledge. A mode...

Yet Another Interview With Japanese Pros Daigo and Iyo - This Time from Capcom

A lot more organized and interesting compared to the previous interview. Here's an excerpt: Shino: What is it that keeps you playing SFIV? What’s so fun about it? Iyo: Well, I could not win when I first started to play. I was so bad at it. So many good players who are also my friends I met through playing Capcom vs. SNK2 started to play SFIV. So I naturally got introduced to the game. But it was October while all the other strong players had been playing since July. I started late. It’s not an excuse but I just could not win. So I started play more seriously. Definitely when I finally won though, I felt the joy. I’ve been enjoying the game ever since. You get to play with so many strong players, and that’s fun. Daigo: Like I said earlier, it’s just so great to have a large player pool. Even if a game is great, if you don’t have anyone to play with, then it’s just no fun. So, having the huge community like what it has is just a great fun factor. Daigo: I do have to say that I’m impr...

Street Fighter IV US NATIONAL FINALS Tomorrow!

The Street Fighter IV US NATIONAL FINALS is some time tomorrow (Philippine time; April 18 7-11PM US Pacific Time)! I sure hope there'll be streaming video of the event somewhere out there on the Internet. The matches I'm looking forward to are the ones between the US champions and the Japanese and Korean champions (Daigo, Poongko and Iyo). Those will be very entertaining to watch! I know those will be exhibition matches but it will be a good preview for the upcoming EVO2009 Championship Series this year.

Capcom's 2 Hit Super Combo Finish!

Capcom just released Resident Evil 5 in the Asian gaming marketplace this week, and they'll be launching the game in the USA and other places from now up to March 13th. Kudos goes out to CAPCOM ASIA for releasing Capcom games ahead here in Southeast Asia! We got Street Fighter IV ahead of the USA, and for Resident Evil 5, we also got the game early, too. After playing both games, I must say that Capcom's current generation game engine, MT Framework , is really showing its muscle. Dare I say it really does rival the Unreal Engine 3 in terms of technology.... what strikes me about MT framework is how flexible it is. It can go from cell shaded looking graphics such as those in Street Fighter IV, to ultra-realistic environments as presented in their latest release, Resident Evil 5. It truly is hard to believe that the same game engine can create two games that have completely different visual and design themes. Unreal Engine 3 seems to be stuck with beautifully rendering dark, gri...

Tons of CAPCOM News from CAPTIVATE 2008

CAPTIVATE 2008 is Capcom's showcase of their latest and upcoming titles. I found a ton of news, videos and previews and posted it over on the Pinoyxbox forums (since normally we just post opinion articles or other things here on the blog). Pinoyxbox Forum Threads for Capcom games updated with the latest from CAPTIVATE '08 STREET FIGHTER IV RESIDENT EVIL 5 DARK VOID - New Game from Capcom BIONIC COMMANDO
